Scholarships and Financial Aid

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS

There is a considerable amount of financial aid available for students with demonstrated need to attend college.  Both the amount of  aid and the type of aid programs are changing.  In addition, many colleges are adding a merit consideration to grants beyond straight need criteria.

Nevertheless, aid may be available to you even if you believe your income and assets

preclude your getting any.  If in doubt, the financial aid officer of the colleges to which

your child is applying will be happy to give you advice.

There are two national processors who determine your financial need: the College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS) in Princeton, NJ which is available on line October 1st   each year and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be submitted after January 1st.  Both should be submitted as soon as possible after the available date since aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

You will also have to inform the college that you are requesting financial aid. There is

generally a place on the application to fill in this information.  In addition, some colleges may require that you submit substantiating documents such as your most recent 1040, a divorce decree, or medical bills.

The college then will award aid based on whatever guidelines they follow in light of your demonstrated need. Generally, this aid will consist of some outright grants, some loans, and some student work. The distribution of this aid package will vary considerably from college to college, and it should be studied when deciding on the school to attend.

You will also need to be careful of what figure is used by the college to determine their

cost.   Some colleges will grant you aid to meet only tuition, room, and board, while others will also include the "hidden" costs of books, transportation, spending money, etc.

For those families applying to private colleges in South Carolina, there is a South Carolina Tuition State Grant Program.   This grant must be applied for separately from the application through a national processor such as F AFSA.

The College Advising Office does not conduct financial aid searches for individuals, but will nominate qualified candidates for specific scholarships requested by a college or another institution.  Financial Aid/Scholarship searches are conducted by families.  Families are best served by contacting the colleges regarding scholarship/financial aid opportunities, as well as investigating scholarship opportunities through the web and books.  Start your search as early as grade 9 to maximize the number of available scholarships.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Students interested in participating in NCAA athletics should notify the College Advising office, the Athletic Director, and their coach.  This process should begin as early as possible, ideally by the 10th grade year, in order to allow ample time to contact scouts and ensure participation in venues that can affect the success of athletic scholarship applications.  Our coaches and athletic director will contact coaches at respective colleges on behalf of the student and work with the College Advising Office  to market a student for a scholarship, or to gain acceptance to play varsity sports on the college level.  Athletes must apply for eligibility through the NCAA Clearinghouse.  More information is available on the NCAA website at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net
