Volunteer  Opportunities

 

Morrell Convalescent Center in Hartsville needs teens to come any time to read and play games with residents, and to help with other planned activities. To help, call Mary Etheridge at 383-5164, ext. 136.

 

Darlington County Animal Shelter would like volunteers to help walk dogs and bathe and brush dogs and cats. To help, call Cathy James at 398-4402.

 

Friends of the Florence Library need volunteers to help sort and shelve donated books. Contact Joy Jamrok at JKJAMROK@SC.RR.COM or Angela Taylor at ANGELATAYLOR@NATIONALBANKSC.COM

 

Florence YMCA needs volunteers to coach sports teams and officiate at games. They also need lifeguards and child care helpers, and volunteers to help with special needs people. To help, e-mail Boncale@FlorenceYMCA.org.

 

Family Connection of South Carolina, 714 E. National Cemetery Rd. in Florence needs office helpers. Call Jennifer Kelley at 662-0675.

 

Florence County Humane Society needs helps with pet adoptions! Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers are needed at the shelter on the mornings of adoptions to wash the puppies and transport them to the adoption site. E-mail Jayne Boswell at JBoswell@fsd1.org.

 

McLeod Regional Medical Center needs arts and crafts help at its Festival of Trees. Please see bulletin board for more details.

 

DHEC of Darlington and Hartsville need volunteers for its “Reach Out and Read” program to read to children. Please contact Katie Norton at 661-4830 if you can help.

 

Black Creek Arts Center needs volunteers to clean the pottery studio and to help with compiling their monthly mailings. (Mailings are sent the middle of each month). They also need help with gallery openings, which are held the first Thursday evening of most months. To volunteer, contact Terri Pignone at 662-6234.

 

Angel Food Ministries at Highland Park United Methodist Church needs volunteers on food distribution days (one Saturday per month). Strong bodies are needed to unload trucks around 7:30 AM, and other volunteers are needed to help distribute food and carry groceries to cars between 10 AM- 12:30 PM. Manna House needs volunteers to serve meals at lunchtime.  Mrs. Whitehead will provide transportation on selected Weds. (tentative dates – Sept.19, Oct. 17, Nov. 14, Dec. 12). Sign-up sheet is in the office.

 

Morningside Assisted Living Facility in Hartsville needs volunteers to read to and play games with their residents, and to help decorate the facility for holidays and special events. To volunteer, call Dawn Anthony at 857-0159.

 

American Red Cross – Pee Dee Chapter in Florence would like student volunteers to help assemble Comfort Kits for people affected by fire, flood, or hurricane. To volunteer, call Grace Miner at 662-8121, ext. 106.

 

Habitat for Humanity’s Homestore distributes door hangers to neighborhoods, telling residents that their van will be in that neighborhood the next weekend to pick up donations.  Volunteers are needed to tie ribbons on the door hangers, and to go to neighborhoods to tie the door hangers on residents’ doors. This could be done at the volunteer’s convenience, preferably on a weekend. To volunteer, call Amanda McAlpin at 665-1624.
