Responsibilities of the Counselor, the Student, and the Parents
The process of choosing the right college or university requires much consideration and a sharing of responsibilities among the students, the parents, and the college counselor. Following is a list of responsibilities which help ensure the best college placement.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COLLEGE COUNSELOR
- Meet with the student in the spring of the junior year to help the student assess his or her thoughts on the size, type, and location of colleges he or she wants to consider
- Assist the student in creating a balanced list of appropriate colleges and help the student estimate chances of admission
- Assist the student with the application and review before application is sent.
- Write the school recommendation if a part of the college’s application process
- Follow-up with the student during the senior year to remind students of responsibilities and deadlines, answer questions, address concerns, and set up individual conferences if needed
- Respond to student and parent questions and concerns and meet with them for college conferences as requested
- Remind students of their critical responsibilities regarding their commitments to the colleges and the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENT (Senior Year)
- Register for SAT, ACT and SAT Subject testing.
- It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the standardized test required for each school to which he/she is applying.
- Students must order standardized test scores to be sent directly from College Board and ACT to individual schools.
- Complete and return college application planning forms by the deadlines, including:
- Information Form
- Resume
- Essay
- Arrange and attend family/student conference with college counselor to discuss individualized college application plans.
- Investigate college options, as well as planning for and visiting selected schools.
- Attend meetings and complete college forms by deadlines.
- Request letters of recommendations at least three weeks before TCS application deadline.
- Complete college applications 10 days before university submission deadline.
- Apply for scholarship opportunities provided by TCS college counseling office and other sources.
- Notify colleges of your intent to attend and submit housing deposit before May 1st.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PARENTS
- Facilitate the student’s college search, especially regarding visits to the college, which are integral to the process
- Discuss honestly and openly with the student your thoughts, wishes, and preferences especially regarding financial issues
- Make appointments for a college conference with the college advisor as needed or desired
- Remind the student of all application procedures and deadlines
- Submit all forms required of parents, especially financial aid forms, including the FAFSA and Profile
