ITINERARY SPECIALLY PREPARED FOR MARILYN MARSCHEL

DAY 1             DEPARTURE DAY. Take off for Europe on an overnight flight at the start of your educational trip.

DAY 2             PARIS.  Welcome to Paris, the “City of Light” and capital of France. You will be met by your NETC tour director and transferred to the hotel. Why not begin your stay with a visit to the Champs Elysées to enjoy the atmosphere of a streetside café before your tour director conducts an arrival briefing this evening?

DAY 3             PARIS. This morning enjoy a half-day sightseeing of the city with a local guide. Learn how the city has developed over time and about the significant events which have shaped it. Pass along the wide tree-lined boulevards and see many majestic buildings including the Arc de Triomphe, with its Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Napoleon’s gold-domed Les Invalides, Place de la Concorde, Paris’s most famous symbol, the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees. Also included is a tour inside Notre Dame Cathedral, renowned for its flying buttresses and intricately carved gargoyles. Begun in 1163, this structure is one of the triumphs of French architecture and, interestingly, the cathedral square in front of the building is the point from which distances along the great highways radiating from Paris are measured. Legend has it that if you jump on the golden star outside the cathedral you will return to Paris, so be sure to do this before you leave!

This afternoon is free to discover yet more of this spectacular city. The variety of activities on offer is endless, from visiting one of the many excellent museums to taking a trip up to the top of the Eiffel Tower. NETC recommends a visit to the Musée D’Orsay, an art museum housed in an old railway station. Here you will be able to see some incredible 19th century paintings and sculptures. Particularly interesting is the collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, with works by Cezanne, Manet, Monet, Pisarro and Van Gogh.

DAY 4             PARIS.  This morning’s excursion takes us to Louis XIV’s magnificent palace of Versailles, which dates from the 17th century and took 50 years to build. It is the apogee of Pre-Revolutionary royal luxury and authority and was the biggest and most opulent of all European palaces. NETC’s walking tour includes a visit to the Royal Apartments. Most impressive is the King’s Grand Apartment, with six luxurious drawing rooms and the Hall of Mirrors, which was designed to reflect the light from the fountains outside. You will also see the Marble Court, where visiting noblemen could be seen by the King as they drew up in their carriages.

Return to the city this afternoon for more free time for you to discover the delights of Paris at your leisure. For those interested you may wish to visit the old artists’ quarter of Montmartre, where the famous white Sacre Coeur basilica crowns the highest point in Paris.

DAY 5 - 14     HOMESTAY.  This morning leave Paris behind as you board a train to Nantes to begin the 10 day homestay program organized by the group leader.

DAY 15          Return to Nantes  where you will fly home to the United States with many new perspectives and memories.
